Duluth, MN: Better Living Through Trails
August 30, 2010 – 4:29 pm | No Comment

Previously billed as Economic Development, Better Living through Trails is a new twist on an important subject. It speaks to the value of trails and how they can be used to make communities more livable. It’s a little philosophy, a lot of statistics, all in the context of singletrack. Standing in front of a packed house, we spoke to several different community leaders and stakeholders from congressional staffers to city officials. It was the perfect crowd for such a topic.

The Kingdom Sessions

East Burke, Vermont.  Ring a bell?  No?  If you’re a mountain biker then you may want to pay attention.

East Burke is home to the Kingdom Trails, a wildly popular network of over 100 miles of singletrack.  I could spend a lot of time describing it, but I’d rather just get to the point.  Go there, you’ll be blown away.  After traveling and riding throughout the US for almost a year, I can honestly say it’s one of the most unique, exciting, and fun mountain bike destinations I’ve ever visited.

There are a few reasons as to why KT is so special.  Beyond the trails themselves, passionately cared for by the folks at Kingdom Trails Association, are the locals who live, work, and play in the area.  They are certainly some of the nicest, most dedicated bicycle people I’ve ever met.  They understand how valuable mountain biking is for this part of Vermont and they totally get the notion ‘Great Communities Build Great Trails.’

One shining example is the IdeRide crew, our gracious hosts.  In addition to helping us with a phenomenal place to stay (the IdeRide Lodge), they showed us around a bit.  It was a pleasure to meet both Knight and Lilias, a couple of inspirational people who are making a very positive impact to their local area.  The next time you head to northeast Vermont, check out their guide/shuttle/camps/women’s clinic services.
