As an advocate don’t ever assume that every land manager understands everything about mountain biking. Take the time to help them learn. They may not know that ‘singletrack’ is what we seek and it’s possible that they don’t understand the concepts of ‘optional lines’ and ‘freeride’. Make every effort to define the sorts of experiences that mountain bikers seek. Heck, the best way to show them may be to take them on a ride. You’ll be surprised that a little communication and knowledge will go a very long way.

We teamed up with the Southern Off-Road Bicycling Association this past weekend in western North Carolina for some trailbuilding fun. As the largest mountain bike advocacy organization in the southeastern US, SORBA works with over 4,000 members. It was awesome to meet all of the different clubs who share a strong passion for trails.

We started the week in a couple of up and coming mountain bike destinations (Northern Alabama and Chattanooga, TN) and wrapped it up in a well known mecca (Tsali – North Carolina). Our streak of rain and snow continued. Don’t know if it’s good or bad, but we’re getting used to it…

Yes, that’s right folks, snow in North Carolina. I don’t think it’s really that strange since we drive through the Smoky Mountains, but it’s just funny to us. We arrived at the Nantahala Outdoor Center late today with blue skies and sun overhead. Nice! Happy Birthday Mom!
