In the Books: TCC #14

In the Books: TCC #14

Last Friday we turned in our car, handed over our keys, and entered the Trail Care Crew Alumni Association as the 14th Crew. We are so very grateful for the journey we traveled over the last two years. Without a doubt, it ranks as the ‘best job in the world’.

Views from the Upper Deck

With only two visits to go we achieved another milestone in our Trail Care Crew travels – the highest visit. At 10,200 feet, Leadville Colorado is in the heart of the Rockies and home to the Cloud City Wheelers.

Salida: Crossroads to Everywhere

Salida: Crossroads to Everywhere

Had a chance to ride mountain bike trails in Salida last week. It was the perfect place to stretch the legs on the way to Denver from Santa Fe. After a very short detour off Highway 285 unloaded the bikes and gear in an epicenter of fat tire fun.

Golden, CO: Homecoming

Golden, CO: Homecoming

It’s been a rule of thumb to expect the unexpected on the Trail Care Crew. We usually roll into a new town with new faces and new trails every weekend. It’s actually become the rule, not the exception. This past weekend was a little bit different. We started the last month of our TCC tour in very familiar territory: our home state of Colorado.

Street Food: Sometimes You Gotta Bend the Rules

Street Food: Sometimes You Gotta Bend the Rules

I remember the first time I enjoyed street food. I was in a little town on the mainland of Mexico and I was traveling with my family. The memory is very surprising because the importance of food hygiene, something very integral to my parent’s eating habits, had escaped them at the time.

Caffeine-ation: My Own Private Bialetti

Caffeine-ation: My Own Private Bialetti

We’ve been trying to save a few pennies here and there, so we’ve been making our own ‘go juice’ lately. Among the many methods we have to choose from, the mini-espresso maker seems to suit us. Using our favorite little MSR Pocket Rocket we can brew up anywhere; hotel rooms, a host’s kitchen, even our campsite.

Prescott, Arizona: Bucket List

Prescott, Arizona: Bucket List

During the rest of our time in Prescott we focused on Trails and Rides/Social. We rolled into town early to attend Pint Nite, PMBA’s 2nd annual fundraiser (remember, they formed last spring…). It was great to kick back and hang with a very energized and friendly mountain bike community. It was all about being together and celebrating trails. This fall they are hosting The WonderSchlutt, a festival full of riding Prescott’s outstanding trails.

Interview with a Teenager

Interview with a Teenager

The idea was hatched a couple of years ago and it was pretty exciting to get the first trip under our belts. Our ultimate goal is to give each kid a taste of independent travel and see how other parts of the world live. It’s not necessarily about dirt-bagging it, it’s just about peeling back the covers a little more than the average vacation.

Santa Cruz, CA: Goin’ Grassroots

Santa Cruz, CA: Goin’ Grassroots

As usual, we began at the grassroots. We also unveiled a new presentation dedicated to the subject. During the debut, we focused on being politically savvy and building the necessary relationships that help clubs get what they want.

The ‘How To’ and ‘What to Bring’ Pages

The ‘How To’ and ‘What to Bring’ Pages

It’s time to pay it forward. After four years of non-stop travel we thought we’d put together some resources for other folks who might be planning some sort of adventure. Back in 2007, when we were preparing for our bicycle trip around the world, we did some research. In fact, you could say that we became a little obsessed with it. We read about other people’s trips, their routes, and the gear that kept them moving in the right direction.
